A New Port

3rd Year, 2023, Scott Wall

Set on Douglas Lake in Newport, Tennessee, this project envisions an entirely new island-based community built to provide stability, affordable housing, and affordable products and produce. Dual-unit residences form one-third of the core development of the island, where the other two-thirds go to a grocery store and a bakery. This island is a staple part of the fleet of islands designed by classmates, which every island has a different core development topic.

This is the entirety of Douglas Lake in Tennessee. The enlarged portions are where the islands would be located.

Each residential unit home has two units with a kitchen, a small living room area, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms. The units are compact but usable. The floor plans are mirrored as well. Each unit is provided with a functional kitchen with bar seating, a couch and television, two twin or full-size beds, and functional bathrooms.

The design is of how the program layout would look on the island. The students had to come up with a way to connect to adjacent islands as well, which are the red shapes. A smaller agricultural farm and two barns are placed on the southern part of the island, closest to Island 13, where the agriculture-related goods are. The bakery and grocery store are on the northern part of the island, closest to the public zone and Island 9, where the school is located. The residential district is on the eastern side of the island, closest to Island 11, where the library is located.
